Nu ik dit schrijf, vertoeven we al anderhalve week in het mooie Ierland.
Deze keer in het noorden, County Donegal om precies te zijn.
Hier als je het toelaat beland je in geweldige verhalen. Daarom wanneer je over je reis verteld lijkt het alsof je niet uitverteld raakt. Wat ons naar Ierland,Schotland ,Noord Ierland,Wales en Engeland trekt is de mysterie en geschiedenis van het land. Het eenvoudige waar je gewoon tevreden mee hoort te zijn, De mensen hier zijn trots op hun land willen je met trots hun land tonen en vertellen of zingen over hun legendes.
De natuur zo mooi zo puur Je komt hier op plaatsen waar het 300 jaar geleden er nog precies zo uitzag Je treft hier ruïnes, wat me opviel zijn de vele onbewoonbare huizen Wat gebeurd daar mee Sommige zijn zelfs in een slechte staat maar deze spookhuizen zijn toch eigendom sommigen hebben dit als eigendom om straks van de belastingen geld terug te krijgen. Anderen sparen geld om straks hun vervallen cottage te kunnen opknappen.
We vertoeven in de Abbey lane vlakbij de oude watermolen ff buiten Ballyshannon. Wanneer we Ballyshannon in lopen lopen we al langs 3 spookhuizen
Ballyshannon is een leuk klein stadje met veel geschiedenis. Sinds 5 jaar hebben ze een klein museum. Op de bovenste verdieping waar je via kleding en meubelwinkel komt, en een koffieshop. Aldaar vind je de geschiedenis van Ballyshannon spullen zoals oude borden, over het leven in Ballyshannon en bekende Ballyshannons Rory Gallagher werd aldaar geboren op 2 maart 1948 in het Rock hospital.

When we walk into Ballyshannon we walk past 3 haunted houses Ballyshannon is a nice little town with a lot of history. They have had a small museum for 5 years. On the top floor where you come through clothing and furniture store, and a coffee shop. There you will find the history of Ballyshannon stuff like old stuff and things, plates even boats old photographes and paintings, all about life in Ballyshannon and famous Ballyshannons Rory Gallagher was born there on March 2, 1948 at the Rock hospital.

Ik verdiep me altijd in verhalen en geschiedenis, In Ballyshannon rust ook veel geschiedenis en verhalen, wat ik zeer waardeer aan Ierland en Schotland is dat hun de verhalen en geschiedenis levend houden , soms kun je ze nog voelen zien en aanraken.
I always immerse myself in stories and history, Ballyshannon has also a lot of history and stories, what I really appreciate about Ireland and Scotland is that they keep the stories and history alive, sometimes you can still feel and touch them.
Het Rockziekenhuis ligt boven op de Rock en precies ervoor staat het workhouse met een behoorlijke geschiedenis. In 1843 werd het geopend en arme mensen en wezen moesten er werken voor eten . Ietsjes later brak de hongersnood uit Weesmeiden werden verscheept naar Australië om aldaar uitgehuwelijkt te worden en velen in het workhouse stierven aan de hongerdood.
Voor het kerkje werden hun begraven zonder naam op het graf zonder iets Daarom werden pas geleden door kinderen narcissen geplant op de plaats waar de slachtoffers van de hongersnood begraven waren geplant en in de lente kleurt hun begraafplaats geel van de narcissen.
The Rockhospital is on top of the Rock and the workhouse with a decent history is right in front of it. In 1843 it was opened and poor people and orphans had to work for food . A little later the famine broke out. Orphans were shipped to Australia to be married there and many in the workhouse died of starvation.
In front of the church they were buried without a name on the grave without anything For this reason, daffodils were only recently planted by children at the site where the victims of the famine had been buried and in the spring their cemetery turns yellow with daffodils.

The Paupers graveyard
In 1847, op het hoogtepunt van de "Grote Hongersnood", werd dit land gegeven door kolonel Thomas Connolly, een lokale huisbaas voor de gedetineerden. Naar schatting zijn hier tijdens de hongersnood minstens 1000 slachtoffers begraven en in de 19e eeuw werden hier nog andere gevangenen begraven. Er zijn geen gegevens van deze mensen
In 1847, at the height of the “Great Famine” this land was given by Colonel Thomas Connolly, a local landlord for the burial of the workhouse inmates. It is estimated that at least 1000 victims were buried here during the famine and other workhouse inmates continued to be buried here in the 19th century. No records exist of these people.

Er valt heel wat meer te zien in het mooie Donegal en omstreken.
Zo reden we door de bergen en bij een stop troffen we de uit Berlijn afkomstige Katja ze zat in een koffiekar op een geweldige uitkijk plek Daar werd trouwens een mooie foto met regenboog gemaakt . Ze verkoopt lekkere koffie en popcorn. Ze vertelde dat ze met haar partner de keuze gemaakt had om naar Donegal teverhuizen. Je behoeftes moet je terugdraaien dan kun je hier best goed vertoeven. In de winter kan het water bevriezen dan zet je een glimlach op en gaat naar een vriendin en vraagt of je bij haar mag douchen.
Wanneer ik mijn haren wil drogen met de föhn dan moet de tv ff uit want we hebben niet zoveel stopcontacten.
En zo vernamen we nog meer leuke verhalen.
We bezochten Lissadell house daar waar Leonard Cohen in 2010 in de tuin had opgetreden.
We leerden het verhaal van de troubles en de rebellen in 1916 over countess Markievics over haar zus Eva die zich inzette voor de rechten van de vrouw.
De uit 1740 daterende Alpine Garden . Echt de moeite waard.
There is a lot more to see in beautiful Donegal and surroundings. So we drove through the mountains and at a stop we met Katja from Berlin. She sat in a coffee cart on a great lookout spot. There was also made a beautiful picture with rainbow. She sells tasty coffee and popcorn. She said that she and her partner had made the choice to move to Donegal. You need to turn back your needs then you can stay here pretty well. In the winter the water can freeze then you put a smile on and goes to a friend and asks if you can take a shower at her’s . I can tell, when I have to dry my hair with hairdryer? We have to turn out the tv because we have less electrical outlets. And so we heard even more nice stories.

Belfast
We bezochten met de Ulsterbus vanuit Enniskillen Belfast. Vanuit Ballyshannon kun je met de bus naar Enniskillen. Let wel even op de bustijden als je terugkomt ivm de aansluiting van de Noord Ierse bus en de Ierse bus. Je zou bv 1 uur door Enniskillen kunnen vertoeven .Belfast is een verrassende moderne stad een weekend aldaar een bezoek brengen is een aanrader. Ik ben niet zo van de museumbezoeken en de toerist uithangen maar een bezoekje aan het Titanic museum is ook een aanrader. Daarvoor maak ik een uitzondering. Om de drukte meester te blijven hebben hun het zo geregeld dat groepen ingedeeld worden wanneer je aan de balie je tickets koopt, moet je ca 1 uur wachten voordat je het museum in mag. Maar geen probleem buiten is ook nog vanalles te zien en te doen. Zo wordt voorkomen dat ten alle tijden de drukte mee valt heel slim. Je verlaat het museum met nog meer respect voor de bouwers, ontwerpers en voor de slachtoffers van die ramp toen in 1912.
We visited with the Ulsterbus from Enniskillen Belfast. From Ballyshannon you can take the bus to Enniskillen. Pay attention to the bus times when you come back because of the connection of the Northern Irish bus and the Irish bus. You could stay for example 1 hour by Enniskillen.
Belfast is a surprising modern city .To visit a weekend there is a must. I'm not into the museum visits and hanging out the tourist, but a visit to the Titanic museum is also recommended. I make an exception for this. In order to keep up with the crowds, they have arranged for groups to be classified, when you buy tickets at the counter, you have to wait about 1 hour before you can enter the museum. But no problem outside is also visible and a lot to do. This prevents crowds at all times. Very clever I think
You will leave the museum with even more respect for the builders, designers ,workers and for the victims of that disaster in 1912.
Het klimaat hier. Afgelopen juni hebben ze ook hier de hitte gekend zo dat zelfs ook hier de weilanden en tuinen geel kleurden We dachten dat we nu in Augustus een regenachtig verblijf kregen. Van de 14 dagen hebben we 2 regendagen gehad de rest, kijk naar de fotos goed weer. We mogen niet klagen.
De lichtval is hier zo mooi dat je blijft fotos maken. Afgelopen zondag was Graveyard day en vlakbij zat ik op ons terras van de b&b en schilderde of tekende ons uitzicht. Toen heb ik zelfs een kleine zonnebrand opgelopen.
Gisteren kwamen we thuis van een heerlijke wandeling langs de atlantische oceaan in Bundoran en een vrouw uit Cork riep lachend tegen ons, “wat is het koud hier” en wij keken van welnee het valt reuze mee hoor. We waren net helemaal uitgewaaid.
De mensen van onze b&b (Channel View) zijn geweldige lieve mensen. Vooral Patricia verteld veel en adviseert de leukste plekken hier in de omgeving die vind je nergens terug in brochures. Ze zoekt alles voor je op en de volgende ochtend staat ze met een briefje met routes of tijdstippen van de volgende locatie die je absoluut moet bezoeken.
Desmond of Dessie, is nooit beroerd om je naar de bushalte te brengen of ‘savonds naar de pub in Ballyshannon waar altijd live muziek is. Wel laat altijd rond 10 uur pm.
Afgelopen zaterdag was live muziek in Deicy Rileys We troffen aldaar een leuk koppel uit Dublin. Een oergezellige avond gehad. Hun logeerden bij het Dorrians hotel en om 2 am liepen we met naar het hotel en maakten nog een fotostop bij het Rory Gallagher standbeeld. De volgende ochtend vertrokken hun weer richting Dublin.
Bij dat zelfde Dorrians hotel kun je goed eten in de bewonderings mooie bar. Was toevallig aldaar wielrennen voor een goed doel aan de gang. Uiteraard gingen we naar buiten supporten. Geweldig om te zien Het verkeer bleef gewoon doorgaan zo gebeurde het dat nr 1 en 2 juichend over de streep kwamen en de nr 3 tussen een koewagen hing zich rot schold en naast mij een Chinese toeriste stond met sigaret in de mond en thumbs up wees. Echt een monty python moment .
In Ballyshannon zijn een paar goede restaurants waar je goed kunt eten.

Een aanrader is Smugglers creek inn. Je moet voor Dinner daar reserveren voor pub food kun je daar terecht als er plek is.
Het is 6,7 km van Ballyshannon en je kunt daar een adembenemende strandwandeling maken. Die zonsondergangen daar. Grappig ook dat je aldaar met de auto het strand op mag.

Last Sunday was Graveyard day and I sat on our terrace of the b & b and painted or drew our view. Then I even contracted a small sunburn. Yesterday we came home from a wonderful walk along the atlantic ocean in Bundoran and a woman from Cork shouted at us laughingly, "what is it cold here" and we watched like, it is not that bad. :) We had just been completely blown away. ;)
The people of our b & b (Channel View) are wonderful sweet people. Especially Patricia , she tells a lot and advises the best places in the area that you will not find anywhere in brochures. She looks for everything for you and the next morning she is with a note with routes or times of the next location that you absolutely must visit. Desmond or Dessie, is never touched to take you to the bus stop or in the evening to the pub in Ballyshannon where there is always live music. Well always leave around 10 pm. Last Saturday was live music in Deicy Rileys We met a nice couple from Dublin. A very cozy evening. They stayed at the Dorrians hotel and at 2 am we walked to the hotel and took a photo stop at the Rory Gallagher statue. The next morning they left for Dublin again. At the same Dorrians hotel you can eat well in the admiring bar. By coincidence there was a cyclingrace for a good cause in progress. Of course we went outside to support. Great to see The traffic just kept going through the cyclist so it happened that nr 1 and 2 jubilantly crossed the line and the nr 3 between a cowcar hung , rotten scolded and next to me a Chinese tourist stood with cigarette in the mouth and thumbs up pointed. Really a monty python moment.
In Ballyshannon are a few good restaurants where you can eat well.

A must is Smugglers creek inn. You have to reserve for Dinner there for pub food you can go there if there is place. It is 6,7 km from Ballyshannon and you can take a breathtaking beach walk there. Loved those sunsets there. It is also funny that you can park there on the beach by car.
Good pubs? There are only good and cosy pubs in Ireland.

Ik vroeg me af of de Ierse jeugd nog wel Gaelic krijgt geleerd, en bv het koppel uit Dublin spreken geen woord Gaelic. Op scholen krijgen de kinderen wel nog Gaelic taalles en het hangt van de families af of hun wel of niet Gaelic met de kids doen spreken.
Ik zelf zou wel degelijk de Oer taal blijven gebruiken.
I was wondering if the Irish youth still learns Gaelic, and for example the couple from Dublin do not speak a word Gaelic. At schools the children still get Gaelic language lessons and it depends on the families whether or not they make Gaelic speak to the kids. I myself would continue to use the Primordial language.
Wanneer je een dag regen hebt moet je eens naar Belleek gaan naar de pottery aldaar. Bij het al over 160 jaar vakmansschap in Belleek krijg je een rondleiding is er een museum een winkeltje en een teahouse.

Zo dit is dan mijn reisverslag van onze Donegal reis, we hebben uiteraard maar ca 1200 foto's gemaakt en 20 filmpjes Je snapt dat ik deze niet allemaal kan tonen maar Ik hoop dat je met dit verslag een idee hebt hoe geweldig wij het daar hebben gehad en hoe geweldig dit plekje op aard is..
